When should I bring my Children in for their first check up?

“My Children’s first
At Ashgrove Dental, we see a lot of young families, and we get this question a lot from new mothers and fathers.
According to the Australian Dental Association (ADA), it is recommended for children to have their first check-up when either; 1) their first teeth come through or 2) they become 12 months old.
It may seem very young, but our goal here is to get kids comfortable at the dentist. From their point of view, they are seeing a complete stranger. Who has big chairs, funny tools that pick and prod at their teeth and gums. As adults sometimes we already find this a little intimidating… but for our little ones out there, that’s a huge ask.
Hence, what we are trying to achieve with early check-ups is having them feel comfortable, feel safe and feel like they can have fun at the dentist.
At Ashgrove Dental, we offer children’s dentistry. Read more about our services here.
What is the aim of children’s check ups?
The end goal is to make sure that your children’s teeth are sound and have no holes. However, we can’t do this properly if they don’t feel comfortable enough for us to see their teeth.
So for our first check up with kids, our goal is to have them familiarise themselves at the dentist and start good habits. If we can get a look at their teeth, great! Otherwise, that’s okay, we’ll try again next time. If they’re feeling comfortable though, we may get them to hop onto the chair have a bit of a play and go for a ride. For kids on their second or third visit, we will start to introduce them to more instruments like our little mirrors. We would also start taking them through the cleaning procedure to make their teeth all sparkling clean.
Eventually, around the age of 5 – 6, we would be taking our first X-rays for your children. At that point, we would have completed the full comprehensive check-up, and they probably didn’t even suspect a thing!
We would love to see your children happy and smiling after seeing us here at Ashgrove Dental.
