Why Do I Get Sensitive Teeth?
The fundamental reason that we get sensitive teeth, is because the underlying layers of the teeth are exposed as a result of outer surfaces of teeth being worn away. The two types of exposure are;
1) Exposed Root Surface from Recession
Which can occur if we brush too hard, gum disease and in some rare cases orthodontic work, all of which traumatize the gums resulting in recession and exposure of the root
2) Exposed Underlying Tooth Structure
Which can occur from brushing too hard, having a diet consisting of acidic or sour foods (citrus fruit, vinegar, wine, carbonated drinks, sports drinks, etc.) and decay that is newly formed or getting in underneath existing dental work. This results in the outer layer of the tooth (enamel) to be worn away, exposing the inner layer of the tooth (dentine) which causes sensitivity.

How do I manage Sensitive Teeth?
Like most dental issues, we need to identify what is the cause of the problem. For sensitive teeth that’s caused by brushing too hard or consuming an acidic diet, we need to stop and reduce this to prevent any further loss of tooth structure. If it’s caused by gum disease, this needs to be addressed before we can manage the symptoms of sensitivity.
Once the cause has been managed, we can then manage the symptoms of sensitivity. The simplest way to achieve this is to use sensitive toothpaste, such as Sensodyne or Colgate Sensitive Pro-relief. If however, the sensitivity still occurs after the use of these desensitising products, we may need to look towards converting exposed tooth surfaces with a filling.
