Pregnancy is an exciting time, no doubt. But, at the same time, it comes with many questions – especially when it comes to your health.
There are just so many factors to consider, coupled with a lot of second-guessing about whether something is safe (or not).
That’s completely understandable because your and your baby’s health are of utmost importance.
A common concern we hear (all the time) is… “Is it safe to have dental work done during pregnancy?”
The short answer is YES!
Can I Go To the Dentist While Pregnant?
Yes, you can! In fact, you can, and you must visit the dentist during pregnancy.
Why? The significant hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy can affect not just your overall health, but also your oral health.
Here are some of the common dental problems many face during pregnancy.
- Tooth Decay: Due to pregnancy cravings (especially the tendency to crave sugary foods), pregnant women tend to be more prone to tooth decay. Morning sickness can also increase the risk of tooth decay.
- Tooth Wear: If you suffer from morning sickness, you may experience tooth erosion. This is because stomach acid increases, which attacks your tooth enamel.
- Pregnancy Gingivitis: The increase in the levels of progesterone and oestrogen during pregnancy can make your gums more sensitive to plaque on your teeth. You may experience symptoms like swollen, tender and bleeding gums.
- Gum Disease: Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a severe gum infection that can not only affect your oral health but also your overall health and that of your baby. Severe periodontitis can even lead to premature birth and low birth weights.
For these reasons, dental care should never take a backseat during pregnancy. Make it a point not to miss your routine dental check-ups and maintain good oral hygiene at home.
Can I Get Dental Fillings While Pregnant?
Yes, you can.
Almost all general dental treatments like fillings, are generally safe to undergo even during pregnancy.
Despite being a routine treatment, dental fillings play a major role in preventing tooth decay from worsening. And honestly, that’s a relief because if the condition worsens, you may face more complications that require complex procedures.
And that extra stress is not something you want.
That being said, make it a point to let your dentist know that you are pregnant – even if it seems early. This helps us tailor your treatment, plan it with your pregnancy in mind and ensure you are as comfy as possible during your appointment.
When is the Best Time to Get a Filling When Pregnant?
Yes, you can get dental fillings when pregnant. But the timing can make all the difference.
We recommend letting your first trimester pass before getting a filling. Here’s why:

How Safe are X-Rays, Filling Materials and Anaesthetics During Pregnancy?
Dental X-rays
Exposure to X-ray radiation when pregnant – is it safe or not?
This is a question we get asked A LOT, and with good reason. Once again, it depends on the time and the level of radiation you are exposed to.
When you are in your first trimester, it’s best to avoid exposure to high levels of radiation. This is because it can result in issues such as foetal growth restriction and other birth defects.
However, it’s important to note that dental X-rays are unlikely to cause such issues because they use very low radiation levels. Nevertheless, we will only take X-rays when necessary and will use protective measures where required to minimise exposure.
Filling Materials
Dental fillings are considered safe during pregnancy. Among the different fillings, composite fillings are preferred for pregnant patients.
When you come in for your appointment, our dentist will discuss the available options and recommend what’s best for you.
Local Anaesthetic
Like with most dental procedures, dental fillings are also done under local anaesthesia. Don’t worry, it’s considered safe when used correctly. Once again, timing is crucial and it’s best to seek treatment after the 12th week of pregnancy.
So, what’s the verdict – can you get dental fillings when pregnant? In most cases, yes! If you are pregnant and experience pain, visit our clinic as soon as possible. Our tailored and well-planned care can provide relief while preventing further complications.
